Another activity for this course requires us to create a tree. Different kinds of tree were suggested. I decided to build an educational tree where I express my idea that we should combine SL educational tools with web-based tools.

This is the content of the notecard I included in my project (the notecard is located inside the garden bench I added. The base where the tree was planted contains the links to the tools on the tree.
Blending SL and web-based tools
Blended learning is being implemented in many institutions worldwide. The original concept of blended learning was the combination of F2F (face to face) instruction and the use of the Internet. Nowadays, when we are using SL as an educational environment, the concept of blended learning can be modified to the use of web-based tools in combination with SL in-world learning.
What are the advantages?
- Catering to students different learning styles
- Giving students the opportunity to use their educational resources even if they cannot access SL (many institutions do not allow access to SL).
- Overcoming some SL restrictions regarding the use of videos, recordings, and writing. To use streaming video and audio in SL you need to be the owner of the land in order to deed multimedia players. To upload a 10-sec sound, you need to pay 10 L$, and 10 seconds is usually not enough for a recording. Regarding writing, it is still very cumbersome to have writing classes in SL because we cannot find a rich text editor.
- Most web-based resources are free. Even though there are many free educational tools in SL, many others have to be bought.
So, why not combine SL with web-based applications? We would be offering the best of both worlds :-)
I am presenting several web-based applications that can be easily combined with SL instrution. Click on the boards on the base of the tree to get to their sites. I have included the ones we are using in this course, and some others that I personally use.
